WELDING POSITION: PIPE

WELDING POSITIONS- PIPE

BASICS

·         Pipes are also having welding in different positions as per their application and orientation.

·         Welder should weld the pipe in which position he is qualified only.

·         In symbolic representation of position F denotes fillet weld and G denotes Groove weld.

·         During welder qualification needs to know about all the welding positions because it is essential parameter of WPS.

·         Mostly versatile & selected position is flat because molten metal is drawn into cavity under the action of gravity force.

·         As in plate welding position is defined as per welding joint in the plate, whereas in the pipe welding position is defined by using position of pipe.

WELD POSITION: 1G

·         In this position pipe is kept in horizontal position.

·         Welder is upon the pipe and pipe is rotating about its linear axis so that welding is done in flat position.

·         Welder position is stationary and only pipe is moving in this type.

·         It is the most useful position among all other positions of pipe welding.

WELD POSITION: 2G

·         In this type of welding position the pipe is kept vertical and welding is done horizontal.

·         Pipe can be rotated about its vertical axis.

·         Welder is doing welding from the side of the pipe.

·         In 2G welding position there is chances of molten metal drop down during welding.

WELD POSITION: 5G

·         It is the welding position in which pipe is in horizontally kept.

·         During welding pipe does not rotate about its axis as it is kept stationary.

·         Welder doing welding by moving around the pipe.

·         This position almost same as per the 1G except pipe rotation.

·         It is quite difficult due to stationary of pipe.

WELD POSITION: 6G

·         In this position of pipe welding the pipe is kept at some angle or slop.

·         For better result of welding joint the angle is about 45 degree with the horizontal.

·         In this position pipe do not rotate hence welder needs to be rotate about pipe.

·         For better surface finish and welding strength the pipe is taking for welding at an angle 45 degree from vertical axis or horizontal axis.

·         This is the most difficult welding position ever seen in piping, hence higher skilled and experienced welder need for this type of welding.
