HOW TO CALCULATE WELD TRAVEL SPEED

TRAVEL SPEED

·         It is the speed of welder of doing welding on job.

·         It is required to calculate the travel speed during welding procedure qualification and performance qualification record.

·         Travel speed is ultimate effects on the welding defects like lack of fusion, lack of penetration, weld bid height etc.

·         To avoid this type of defects needs to calculate the weld travel speed.

·         After calculating weld travel speed should compare it with standard speed that is pre-calculated by using WPS standard data.

STEPS

·         Make a V preparation on base plates of an angle 60-70 degree.

·         Take a stopwatch and start it as soon as welding is start.

·         Stop the watch timing after welder completed his one run that is run start and run end timing.

·         Measure the linear distance of welding and note it down.

·         Measured distance is denoted by ‘L’.

·         Note down the time required to complete one run.

·         Measured time is denoted by ‘T’.

·         Now by using following formula we can calculate the travel speed.

 

Notes

·         Welder should not stop within one weld run or you can decide the specific distance and then start welding and complete it in one run only.

·         All other parameters should be as per standard WPS.

·         To get exact travel speed for full welding run you may calculate the travel speed for each run that is for root run, intermediate runs and final run after that take an average travel speed.
